Board, Staff & Partners


Hank Coussens, Jr, Board Chairman resides in Grant Township.  He is a 1987 graduate of Purdue   University with a BS in Agricultural Economics.  Hank has been a farmer since 1987.  He farms with his brother Ed and parents Henry & Mary Lou Coussens.  He has been on the board since 1997.


Brian Johnson, Board Member resides in Iroquois Township with his wife Richelle.  Brian graduated from Purdue Univeristy with a BS in General Agriculture.  Brian has lived and farmed all his life in Newton County.  He has been on the SWCD board since 2009.


Dan Voglund, Asst Treasurer resides in Jefferson Township.  He received a BS in Agronomy from Purdue University.  Dan has spent the last 33 years working in the Seed and Chemical Industry presently working with Bayer CropScience.  He owns a farm in Washington Township, which incorporates 3 different CRP practices.


Mike Schoonveld, Board Member resides in Colfax Township with his wife Peg.  After attending Purdue University, he worked for the DNR at Willow Slough.  Now he operates a charter fishing business.  He has been on the board since 2010.



Lyle Busboom, Board Member resides in Lake Township with his wife Bethany and 3 daughters. He received a BS in Agronomy from the University of IL in 1997.  Lyle started his own Consulting Business in 2000 called CropGuard Services. He has been working for Fair Oaks Farm Supply since 2005 as an agronomist .  Lyle joined the SWCD Board in 2013.

Rose Morgan, Executive Director & Educator lives in Beaver Township with her husband, Dale.  Rose has been doing the administration, education and technical duties of our office since 2007.  Please feel free to call our office with any questions at 219-285-2217




Kevin Shide, NRCS is a District Conservationist for Newton and Jasper Counties.  He has been working for Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for 7 years, providing conservation assistance in Elkhart, Kosciusko and LaGrange Counties in his previous posts.  Kevin graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Agronomy. He grew up in rural Jasper County in the Rensselaer area.


Sarah Wolf is our Resource Specialist with the Indiana State Department of Agriculture and works in Jasper, Lake, Benton, and Newton counties. Her responsibilities include assisting county soil and water conservation districts and promoting conservation programs.  She is also involved in the Upper Iroquois Watershed Initiative. Prior to this position, she worked for Indiana State Parks and the National Park Service among other natural resource-related positions. She graduated from Purdue University with a Master of Science in Agronomy in 2010. She is passionate about protecting and enhancing natural resources and water quality, and teaching and inspiring others to do the same. 



Monthly Business Meetings are held the 3rd Thursday every month unless posted.  They are held at our office at 7:00 pm CST.  They are open to the public.




Newton County SWCD is committed to providing information about soil, water and related natural resource conservation: identify and prioritize local soil and water resource concerns; and connect land users to sources of educational, technical and financial assistance to implement conservation practices and technologies.
